The longest non-stop flight in the world. Without landing two nights and a day. The busiest ferry crossing in the world

Every day, hundreds of flights are made around the world, carrying tens of thousands of passengers. Air travel takes much less time than traveling by car or train. For example, to cover by car the distance that makes the longest flight in the world, it will take at least two weeks.

The longest non-stop flight from Newark to Singapore is regularly operated by an Airbus operated by Singapore Airlines. Depending on weather conditions, the flight can take from 18 hours 40 minutes to 19 hours exactly. For the first time, the Singaporean carrier made a flight in 2004, and for more than 9 years now, passengers can cross a distance of 15,345 km in a short time, which is almost equal to the length of the Eurasian continent from west to east.

The second longest non-stop flight is the Los Angeles-Singapore route. In just over 17 hours, the airbus covers 14,000 celestial kilometers. Regularly 313 passengers (that's how many people can fit on board the aircraft) depart from the city of angels to get to the capital of ancient Chinese architecture, the city of butterflies and reptiles in 17 hours.

The third place is occupied by the Boeing 777-200LR airliner on the route Johannesburg - Atlanta. For 16 hours and 35 minutes, the plane carries its passengers through the clouds covering the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The first such flight took place in 2009: everything went well, and the flight has since become regular. All travelers who were lucky enough to take this flight note the magnificent view of Johannesburg that opens immediately after takeoff.

Some historical facts

Aircraft began to cover such significant distances relatively recently. First opened in 1961 route with a distance of more than 9 thousand kilometers. The flight from Tel Aviv to New York took 9 hours and 30 minutes.

In 1976, air carriers managed to set a new record for the longest non-stop routes. The distance from New York to Tokyo (this is how the Boeing 747 followed) was (and still is) almost 11 thousand kilometers. At the end of the same year, the famous Boeing began to run between Sydney and San Francisco, regularly covering almost 12 thousand kilometers.

Embrace the vast expanses of our country

The longest flight in Russia is recognized as a non-stop flight from Moscow to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The distance between these cities is 7 and a half thousand kilometers, modern aviation overcomes it in 8 hours.

The first flight on this route was made back in 1938. Pilots V.K. Kokkinaki and A.M. Bryandinskiy spent more than a day in the sky to reach their destination. During this flight, the pilots managed to set a speed record on a small two-seater aircraft, and at the same time the whole world learned about the new shortest route from the Soviet capital to the shores of Pacific Ocean. Both pilots, as a result, received the well-deserved titles of Heroes of the Soviet Union.

Not everyone can be giants...

If during the longest flight, passengers have to spend 17 hours in the sky, then the shortest flight takes only 4 minutes, two of which the car spends on starting the engine, taking off and braking. The route of the aircraft runs between two small Scottish islands, and the distance between them is only a few tens of meters longer than the length of the runway. It is worth noting that only three people work at the airport where the plane lands, and the entire population of the island is 70 people.

The ticket price includes compensation for the emission of burnt fuel into the atmosphere. Upon landing, all passengers of this "mini" flight receive a document with the personal signature of the captain of the aircraft stating that they have made a contribution to the environmental fund.

There are other small flights in the world. For example, a Polynesian airline takes only five minutes to lift a plane into the sky, while a flight between the cities of Burlington and Rochester in America takes seven minutes.

For many, air travel has long been an integral part of life. Someone uses them so often that for these people it is a simple part of their daily routine. And yet they remain heavy and tiring for those who fly a lot.

Therefore, some people prefer exclusively non-stop flights. It's both faster and more convenient. Therefore, airlines do not stop offering long-distance non-stop flights. The longest flights in the world are often in good demand among passengers.

It means commercial flight, during which no intermediate transfers are planned. It must meet the following criteria:

  • the total distance between the point of arrival and departure must be at least 12,000 km;
  • total flight time from 15 hours.

Basically, such long-distance routes are laid along the great circle and over the polar regions, since it is the shortest distance between two points on Earth.

Map of direct flights in the world.

In total, almost all of the world's longest non-stop air travel originates from South-East Asia to cities in North America.

Advantages and disadvantages of non-stop flights

The advantage of such a flight is that you do not have to stand in line for check-in at the transfer airport. You calmly sit down at the starting point of the route and spend the entire flight in a chair.

The disadvantages are that, as a rule, passengers simply do not know what to do with themselves all the time of the flight. It is very difficult to spend 15 hours or more in a chair.

Therefore, on such routes they try to provide various entertainments for passengers as much as possible.

To keep your legs from getting stiff, be sure to get up and walk down the aisle to stretch your legs a little.

The longest flights by plane

Below are 10 longest routes offered by different airlines.

Here comes first flight between Doha in Qatar and Auckland operated by Qatar Airways. The total distance covered is 14,535 km.

Eighth place was again taken by Emirates with their Dubai to Houston flight. On the Boeing 777-200LR, passengers overcome 13,144 km in 16 hours 20 minutes. For the first time, he passed December 3, 2007.

The ninth place is legally occupied by Flight Washington - Johannesburg, from South African Airways. The route will be 13,084 km, and in time - 15 hours 10 minutes. Airbus A340-300 takes to the air for the first time May 1, 2009 to take this flight.

On the same day, the first Dubai to San Francisco flight Emirates company. Boeing 777-200LR overcame the route 13,041 km in 16 hours. He is at the bottom of our list.

As you can see, the longest airplane flights in the world are offered by commercial aviation professionals, which means you don't have to worry about your comfort during these flights.

Today, passengers traveling from one end of the world to another do not need to waste extra time and effort on transfers: just choose the right flight and a cheap air ticket. Modern aircraft models are capable of flying ultra-long distances, and airlines, as if competing, are offering longer and longer flights. Do you want to know which planes can cover 12-15 thousand kilometers, from where and where "long-range" liners can fly without transfers and what to do for passengers who will have to spend more than 15 hours on the road? Then read our rating-review of the longest flights in the world.

What is a non-stop flight?

Even not the most experienced travelers are well acquainted with the term "direct flight", when the plane flies directly from the city of departure to the city of arrival without intermediate landings. But there is also another concept - "non-stop flight". To begin with, let's figure out what a non-stop flight is and how it differs from a direct one.

A non-stop flight (as well as a direct flight) is a commercial flight in which no intermediate stops or aircraft transfers are provided - the aircraft flies from point A to point B directly. But there are two special criteria that distinguish it from the rest. The first is a significant route distance (at least 12 thousand kilometers); the second is the significant duration of the flight (passengers have to spend more than 15 hours on the plane).

It is clear that the longest flights are possible between points located in different parts of our planet, for example, between the cities of Southeast Asia and North America. Such a flight has its own characteristics. As in shipping, an air travel route is laid out along a great circle arc, since this is the shortest path. In this case, most often aircraft fly over the polar regions.

The longest non-stop routes are possible between cities that are geographical antipodes, that is, located on opposite ends of the globe relative to its center, while the distance between the antipodes at the equator will be 20,038 kilometers. The possible routes "Buenos Aires-Shanghai" and "Auckland-Madrid" are 19,602 and 19,628 kilometers long, respectively, and the great circle distance between Taipei and Asuncion is 19,918 kilometers.

How long can a plane fly without refueling?

The very first long non-stop route in the days of the active development of jet commercial aviation is considered the Tel Aviv - New York flight. The flight has been operated by El Al since 1961. The distance between the points was 9.1 thousand kilometers. Then the Boeing 707 plane overcame it in 9.5 hours. With the development of aviation, aircraft have become larger and more powerful, and routes have become much longer. But to this day, not every aircraft can fly more than 12,000 kilometers with passengers on board. Only a few types of airliners are capable of this.

So, the world's first long-haul wide-body aircraft Boeing 747 at maximum load it is able to cover a distance of 14.8 thousand kilometers.

For extra long flights from Los Angeles to Singapore or from Dallas to Tokyo, Boeing 777-200LR. It was he who in 2005 set a world record for the flight distance, which other commercial liners could not beat, having overcome 21.6 thousand kilometers in almost 23 hours. True, the liner was empty: there were only 8 pilots and 27 passengers on board (out of a possible 300). When fully loaded, the Boeing 777-200LR can cover 17.5 thousand kilometers.

Another aircraft from the series, capable of flying over extra long distances - Boeing 787-9. Routes up to 14.1 thousand kilometers long are available to him.

Airbus also boasts two "long-range" models . Airbus A340-500(can fly up to 16.7 thousand kilometers) and the "giant" of civil aviation A380, whose flight range is 15.2 thousand kilometers.

One of the best in domestic aviation IL-96 in the Il-96M / T modification - it is able to overcome up to 12.8 thousand kilometers.

The longest plane flights in the world

We have compiled the top 10 longest non-stop flights that airlines operate today. It is worth noting that the duration of the route when performing a one-way flight and the opposite direction is different: weather conditions, air flow directions and wind affect.

1. Doha - Auckland, 14,535 km

The leader among non-stop flights today is the flight connecting the capital of the Arab state of Qatar with the New Zealand Auckland. Flights have been operated by Qatar Airways on Boeing 777-200LR aircraft since February 2017.

The length of the route is just over 14.5 thousand kilometers, its duration is 17 hours and 40 minutes.

2. Perth - London, 14,498 km

A newcomer among the record holders is the Perth-London flight operated by Qantas Airways. The first ever non-stop flight from Australia to the UK was made by a Boeing 787-9 in March 2018. The length of the route was almost 14.5 thousand kilometers, 200 passengers and 16 crew members spent more than 17 hours in flight.

Moreover, on the same day the board took off on a return flight, the road "home" turned out to be faster - 16 hours 34 minutes.

3. Dubai - Auckland, 14,202 km

The top three is closed by another flight to New Zealand, this time from the Emirates. The flight has been operated by Emirates since 2016. The length of the route is 14.2 thousand kilometers. The Airbus A380-800 covers this distance in 17 hours and 15 minutes.

4. Sydney - Dallas, 13,804 km

In fourth place again was the Australian carrier Qantas. His double-decker Airbus A380-800 flies 13.8 thousand kilometers in 15 hours and 35 minutes. The first flight took place in September 2014.

5. Singapore - San Francisco, 13,588 km

About 16.5 hours in the cabin of the Airbus A350-900 liner will have to be spent by passengers of Singapore Airlines flying from the city-state of Singapore to San Francisco. Interestingly, taking into account time zones, the journey takes less than an hour (an airplane departing in the morning arrives in the States with a local time difference of only half an hour), but it takes almost two days to return.

6. Johannesburg - Atlanta, 13,582 km

Since 2009, Delta Air Lines' Boeing 777-200LR has been flying from South Africa to the United States. The airliner overcomes the air route with a length of 13.6 thousand kilometers in 16 hours and 15 minutes. Interestingly, according to the airline's statistics, flight passengers eat 200,000 bags of peanuts and 100,000 packs of crackers a year, washed down with 70,000 cans of soda.

7. Dubai - Los Angeles, 13,420 km

8. Los Angeles - Bangkok, 13,309 km

Thai Airways International passengers flying from the States to Thailand will have to spend 17.5 hours on the way. This flight is one of the oldest on our list - it has been operated by the company's aircraft since 2005. The second longest airliner in the world, the Airbus A340-500, covers a distance of 13.3 thousand kilometers.

9. Dubai - Houston, 13,144 km

And Emirates again, now with a flight to Houston. Flights have been operated by Boeing 777-200LR since 2007. The plane covers a distance of 13.1 thousand kilometers in 16 hours and 20 minutes.

10. Washington - Johannesburg, 13,084 km

Completes the top 10 route from the capital of the States to the largest economic and financial center of South Africa. The flight, which lasts just over 15 hours, has been operated by South African Airways since 2009. Flights are made on Airbus A340-300.

Russian airlines were not included in the rating. Aircraft of the largest domestic carrier, Aeroflot, fly non-stop only up to 10,000 kilometers. The longest route "Moscow - Los Angeles" is 9,782 km (travel time is about 13 hours).

Advantages and disadvantages of non-stop flights

Of course, such extra-long and extra-long flights have their pros and cons. Of the benefits, it is worth noting the time savings. You won't have to lose hours or even days to change planes or stop to refuel your aircraft. No need to stand in additional queues at the airport and be nervous about luggage when transferring to another flight. It is enough to check in once at the point of departure - and do not rush anywhere.

Such a flight also has its drawbacks. Not every passenger is able to endure from 15 to 18 hours of flight in the confined space of an aircraft, even if it is a giant double-decker airliner. Of course, airlines try to brighten up the time you spend on board as much as possible. To make passengers feel comfortable, they are given pillows, blankets, slippers, some companies even warm socks. A large selection of music and films, drinks and meals are essential components of such flights.

What to do on a plane when it's a long flight

A long road in the sky without transfers can tire even the most persistent traveler. How to make sure that the flight is as comfortable as possible for you? We have prepared some tips:

If you can't sleep on a plane, then choose daytime flights, and before that you should get a good night's sleep. Still, you might still need a sleep mask and earplugs in case you decide to take a nap.

When financial possibilities allow, it is better to purchase a ticket to the business class lounge. The seats here are wider and more comfortable, there is more legroom, and fewer passengers. If you can't afford business class, book in advance. In any plane there are both more and less successful places. Just study the cabin layout of your liner and choose the most suitable seat for yourself.

Wear comfortable and comfortable clothing made from natural materials. Yes, and your weekend suit is unlikely to withstand a long sitting in an armchair. It's best to dress in layers so you can quickly adjust to the temperature on the plane. Pack an extra set of underwear to keep you feeling clean and fresh.

During the flight, be sure to take off your shoes. Usually on long-haul flights, flight attendants hand out slippers. But spare socks will also be useful.

Grab in hand luggage hygiene items: toothpaste and brush. It is also worth putting face lotion, moisturizer: the skin also suffers from dehydration.

To warm up, get up every half an hour - an hour, walk along the aisle, do simple exercises. Lack of movement is fraught with swelling and pain in the legs. Compression socks or stockings can also be useful - they improve blood circulation and reduce swelling.

Drink more fluids. The air in airplanes is very dry, so the body needs water to keep all its systems normal. In addition, fluid intake reduces the risk of venous congestion due to prolonged sitting in a chair. And coffee and alcohol, on the contrary, should be abandoned, they only contribute to dehydration.

Do not refuse food, but also do not overeat during the flight. Fasting, as well as the maximum load on the stomach, is an extra test for an organism that is already under stress. It will be optimal to eat what is offered to you on board, no more, no less.

Take care of your leisure. A long flight is a great time to watch a couple of great movies. Take an e-book: you will have an alternative if you get tired of the movie. Tired of having fun? Prepare a to-do list ahead of time that you can deal with during the flight.

In any field of human activity, there are achievements and records, and civil Aviation was no exception. We will analyze which airline has made the longest flight by plane and on which route, as well as consider some interesting points regarding this phenomenon.

Singapore Airlines plane

The longest plane flight offered by the airline Singapore Airlines, in order to get there to Singapore from New York. Passengers need to overcome approximately 15500 kilometers on an Airbus A340 airliner. Travel time will be about 19-19.5 hours passengers are offered comfortable and convenient seats in business class cabins. It is in such conditions that travelers will be able to have a normal rest, staying in the sky for such a long time, because the airliner does not land at any airfield and does not refuel throughout the entire journey.

What can affect travel time?

It is very difficult to determine the exact time of the flight, because several factors affect the duration:

  • Direction of the wind;
  • weather conditions in the region;
  • precipitation intensity, etc.

If the weather conditions are favorable and the wind flow is opposite, then the longest flight by plane will last no more than 19 hours.

It is worth noting that the flight from Singapore to New York is, of course, the longest, but the return route, that is, from New York to Singapore, is even longer by about 15-20 minutes. Therefore, it is more accurate to say that the longest flight in the world is carried out by the same carrier company, but only in the opposite direction, that is, from New York to Singapore.

Briefly about the airliner

There are only 100 seats on board the airliner, there is no economy class, as mentioned earlier, so tickets are sold only in the business class cabin.

The tank is designed for 220,000 liters of kerosene, but since the airliner does not land on the airfield for refueling, there is an additional fuel tank in the luggage compartment. After analysis, it can be concluded that the fuel consumption is quite large: approximately 2,000 liters per passenger, so the Singaporean authorities decided to cancel the flight in this direction.

Longest flights in the world

In addition to the longest flight in the world, which was canceled relatively recently, there are several more long flights that are operated by different air carriers of the world:

  1. Emirates Airlines, flying from Dubai to Panama, was able to stay in the airspace for 17 hours and 40 minutes, that is, it carried out the longest flight by plane without additional landing and refueling.
  2. The flight from Johannesburg to Atlanta by Delta airline takes approximately 17-17.5 hours.
  3. Qantas Airlines, flying from Dallas to Sydney, is in the airspace for approximately 16-16.5 hours. Such a flight should also be considered as the longest flight by plane.
  4. The longest flight in Europe is the route from the French capital to Santiago de Chile. Passengers are on the way for about 14.5-15 hours, depending on the weather conditions of the region and gusts of headwind, and this flight is operated by the carrier AirFrance.

It is also worth noting the equally long flight from Madrid to Santiago, operated by Iberia, lasting 14 hours and 55 minutes, and the flight in the same direction from Paris, lasting 13 hours and 45 minutes.

For travelers to Italy, the longest non-stop flight by plane is offered by Alitalia on the route from the capital of Italy to Buenos Aires. Travel time is approximately 14-14.5 hours, the duration of the trip, as mentioned earlier, depends on the flow of headwinds and weather conditions. A flight on the same route from Frankfurt with a Lufthansa flight takes only 7-10 minutes less. And by purchasing boarding passes to the capital of Argentina for the planes of the British carrier British Airways, passengers will be able to cover a decent distance of almost 12,000 km in about 13.5-14 hours.

The longest non-stop flight in the world is on the "great arc" route. It is he who is the shortest, if you do not take into account the sine and cosine.

Examples of the longest routes in the world

Longest domestic flights

Not only can international flights be long, passengers often require tickets for domestic flights, which also have long travel times. Longest domestic flight by plane:

  • 9400 km from central airport France to Reunion;
  • Passengers from New York to Hawaii need to overcome 8000 km;
  • 6900 km long domestic flight from Sochi to Khabarovsk;
  • 6800 km for passengers from the capital of Russia to Kamchatka.

It is worth noting that it is the French air carriers that carry out the longest flight by plane in the world, if we consider domestic types of flights.

What can passengers do during a long flight?

If you have a long flight, you should think about how to pass the time on the road. Experts advise doing the following:

  • book tickets only for a day flight if passengers cannot fall asleep on board the airliner;
  • book seats well in advance to be able to choose the exact seat that is most suitable for the traveler. You can book a seat through online check-in, which begins its work a day before the take-off of the airliner. Having a boarding pass in their hands, in a place convenient for themselves, passengers will not have to crowd in uncomfortable conditions, while delivering a lot of inconvenience to themselves;
  • on the road you need to take with you all the items that you may need on a long journey, so this moment must be carefully thought out and analyzed. Be sure to have warm clothes on hand that can be conveniently removed or put on if the temperature in the cabin changes dramatically. Equally popular are headphones or earplugs that will help passengers sleep peacefully.

What other things you need to take with you that you may need at any time, the passenger himself must decide, taking into account his preferences and the state of his own health.

First in the world A round-the-world non-stop flight took place in 1949.

A Boeing B-50 Superfortress with a crew of 14 took off from Caswell Air Force Base (Fort Worth, Texas) on February 26.

The plane returned to the same airfield on March 2, covering a distance of 37,742 km in 94 hours and 1 minute. The average speed was 401 km/h. In flight, the bomber's fuel reserves were replenished four times with the help of tanker aircraft.

First non-stop flight around the world without refueling performed December 14–23, 1986 by Dick Rutan and Gina Yeager in a Rutan Model 76 Voyager.

The aircraft with two piston engines was built by aircraft designer Burt Rutan specifically for setting the record. The flight lasted 216 hours 3 minutes and 44 seconds. In total, the aircraft covered 42,432 km at an average speed of 186.11 km/h.

On March 1–3, 2005, entrepreneur and aviator Steve Fossett, flying the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer, set the world speed record non-stop round-the-world manned flight without refueling.

A single-seat turbojet powered aircraft, built by Burt Rutan's Scaled Composites, flew around the Earth in 67 hours, 1 minute and 46 seconds. The average flight speed was 590.7 km / h, the aircraft covered a distance of 36,912 km.

Flight duration records

First in a series high-profile Soviet records the duration of air travel was the achievement of the crew of Valery Chkalov, Georgy Baidukov and Alexander Belyakov.

On July 20–22, 1936, they flew from Moscow to the Far Eastern island of Udd (now Chkalov Island, Khabarovsk Territory) on an experimental ANT-25 aircraft (chief designers - Andrey Tupolev and Pavel Sukhoi). The aircraft covered 9,374 km in 56 hours and 20 minutes.

On July 12-14, 1937, the crew of Mikhail Gromov, Andrei Yumashev and Sergei Danilin on the ANT-25 improved the achievements of their colleagues by making a non-stop flight over a distance of 11,500 km in 62 hours and 17 minutes on the route Moscow - San Jacinto (California, USA).

Their record was broken in November 1938 when two RAF Vickers Wellesley bombers flew 11,539 km non-stop between Egypt and New Australia.

Record duration of piloting aircraft with refueling was installed in 1959 in the United States.

Robert Timm and John Cook took off in a specially prepared Cessna 172 light aircraft from McCarran Airport (Las Vegas, Nevada) on December 4, 1958. The aircraft circled non-stop over the airfield for 64 days 22 hours 19 minutes 5 seconds and on February 5, 1959 made a soft landing. Refueling of the aircraft in the air was carried out twice a day with the help of a fuel truck moving along the territory of the airfield.

The record for the longest piloting an aircraft without refueling installed in 2015 during round the world flight André Borschberg on the Solar Impulse 2 electric plane.

In the period from June 28 to July 3, on the section Nagoya (Japan) - Hawaii (USA), Borshberg covered a distance of 7,212 km in 117 hours and 52 minutes. At the same time, he set a record for the longest non-stop flight for electric aircraft. The round-the-world flight itself was interrupted due to problems with the aircraft's batteries.

Longest flight record unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) installed by QinetiQ Zephyr 7 at the Yuma Test Site of the US Army (Arizona). The UAV stayed in the air for two weeks - 336 hours 22 minutes and 8 seconds.

Longest non-stop scheduled flights

As of June 2017, the longest non-stop flight in the world is operated by the Qatari airline Qatar Airways on the route Auckland (New Zealand) - Doha (Qatar).

"TASS/Ruptly"

The first flight was performed on February 6, 2017. The flight uses a Boeing 777-200LR long-haul wide-body passenger aircraft. It covers the distance of 14,524 km between Auckland and Doha in 17 hours and 30 minutes.

The longest non-stop flight among Russian carriers is operated by Aeroflot. This is flight SU106 on the route Moscow - Los Angeles (USA) with a length of 9781 km. Long-haul wide-body Airbus aircraft A330-200 overcome it in 12 hours and 50 minutes.

Singapore Airlines plans to receive the Airbus A350-900ULR ultra-long-range wide-body passenger aircraft in 2018. It is expected that these machines will be used for non-stop flights from Singapore to New York (USA) for a record distance of 15,348 km.

The material was prepared according to "TASS-Dossier".
