What to see and where to go in Batumi. Batumi: what to see, where to go and what to do What to see in Batumi

Every year a huge number of tourists come to Batumi to enjoy the warmth and soak up the hot sand. But besides the water surface, the resort has other entertainment, as they say, for every taste and budget.

Not everyone is able to sit on the beach from morning until late evening, sunbathing and swimming in the sea.

By the way, in Batumi itself there is also a “winter reminder” - built not so long ago Ice Palace. Sometimes figure skating competitions or hockey matches take place within its walls.

We will not classify and list all the variety of restaurants and cafes in the city as entertainment, especially since there is a separate article on this topic. And most of all, you probably already read about it before.

In this article, we decided to collect the most popular and interesting entertainment, sorting them by category and attractiveness in our subjective opinion.

Cultural entertainment

When you get a little tired of lying around or have a lot of free time, we advise you to immerse yourself in the culture of this wonderful resort, namely, go (at least for fun) to the theater, museum or the Center for Music and Art. We are sure that you will be satisfied and will not regret your choice.

Theaters and cinema "Apollo" in Batumi

There are few theaters in the city: Drama, Summer, Opera and Puppet Theater (we will talk about it below, in the section). Each of them is interesting, beautiful and modern in its own way.

Drama Theater located at: st. Rustaveli, 1, next to (almost in the city center). The building is regularly repaired, maintaining its presentable appearance. And in itself it cannot but cause admiration. Performances in the theater are held regularly on weekends. Foreign artists with unusual premieres are frequent guests there. The Batumi summer theater looks especially beautiful and unusual in the evening when the lights turn on.

Summer Theater located on the central embankment of the city, next to the Colonnade. This is a new building, made of wood, although built in the manner of its predecessor, which burned down in 2001. The theater is especially beautiful in the evening. We recommend attending one of the theater's performances and admiring its interior decoration.

Operatic or, as it is commonly called, the Center for Music and Art welcomes guests and residents of Batumi at the address: st. Odyssey Dimitriadi, 1, across the road from the embankment. The original building opened not so long ago, in 2011. It hosts a variety of concerts, performances, and performances by music and dance groups.

In fact, the Center for Music and Art is a House of Culture. The inside of the building is incredibly beautiful, more like a modern opera house. Performances are held in Russian. There are fountains in front of the House of Culture (as well as on the first floor of the building). In the evening, they illuminate beautifully and shimmer in the rays of the setting sun. And the building of the Center for Music and Art was included in the top five most unusual theaters. We recommend you take a look!

Sights of Batumi:

Batumi Piazza

Coordinates: 41.64958, 41.64116

You can live in a hotel or apartment right on this square. From Piazza you can go to Europe Square or in the other direction - to the Turkish quarter.

There is a cool individual tour of the old Batumi called Soul of Batumi. Walking around the city takes 3 hours. History buffs love it.

I tried to climb onto the deck of one of the liners. I wanted to evaluate my strength and understand whether I could live on this for a week if I decided to sail across the Atlantic.

The guard smiled and winked, but did not let me onto the ship. German pensioners are reliably protected from intrusion by unwanted guests.

There is a boat parking near the port. You can buy a boat trip. Prices from 50 lari($20) per hour. They take you to dolphins in the open sea.

New Batumi - areas starting behind the San Remo cafe. In New Batumi there is Lake Ardagani, the Alley of Heroes, the House of Justice, a couple of parks, and the “Where” and “Liberte” sculptures.

My favorite place in New Batumi is the park on Lech and Maria Kaczynski Street. Roses, palm trees, soft grass. This is my paradise. Most often personal. While housing has not been completed around the park, there are few people here even in summer.

There is a children's playground: 41.62855, 41.59974

Georgian Batumi, although similar to other resort cities, is at the same time very different from them. It can give you the pleasure of the gentle sea, cozy beach and warm sun. But at the same time, it is a dynamic, beautiful city that has managed to harmoniously combine both the cultural and historical riches of past times and the masterpieces of modern architecture.

After reading this text, you will learn about the main attractions of Batumi and its surroundings, and also see beautiful photos with detailed descriptions of the most memorable places.

City architecture

Church of St. Nicholas– an ancient church located in the center of Batumi on the street. Parnavaz Mepe, 20. This is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. Construction of the church began in 1865, and 6 years later the first services were held here.

During Soviet times, this temple, like many others, was closed. Nose 1946 years it was returned to the Georgian public, and the church again began to receive parishioners.

Now it is a functioning church and one of the favorite places among tourists.

Church of the Holy Christ the Savior, located on the street. Z. Gamsakhurdia is the main representative of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Batumi.

It began its existence in 1885-87 thanks to the architect R. Marfeld. Since then, the church has been used more than once for purposes alien to religion, but since 2000, after the reconstruction of the temple, it again became the abode of believers.

Now there are 2 musical groups, a Sunday school and a youth center.

If you find yourself in Batumi, be sure to also visit Argonauts Square(aka Europe Square).

This beautiful square is located in the city center. There are many ancient houses and architectural monuments around it.

On the square itself you will find a rich information stand about the Argonauts, a beautiful monument to Medea and a fountain.

The square is especially attractive in the evening, as there is bright and unusual neon lighting; the houses at this time of day resemble New Year's garlands.

Monuments of Batumi

Perhaps the most famous monument in Batumi is the metal sculpture "Love"(“Ali and Nino”). This marvel of modern architecture was created by a Georgian sculptor T. Kvestidze.

The sculpture is very unusual and beautiful. Two huge metal figures of a man and a woman change their location every ten minutes - moving towards each other until they meet and merge into a single whole.

Here are some more valuable monuments and sculptures of the city:

  • Monument to Memed Abashidze;
  • Fountain with Neptune;

Natural attractions of Batumi

Batumi is a very picturesque city with rich nature. One of its famous attractions is Botanical Garden.

The garden was planned and laid out in 1880 by A. Krasnov, but it first opened its doors to visitors only in 1912.

Today the famous Batumi Garden covers an area of 110 hectares. It is home to more than 5,000 plant species, including many rare and endangered species.

The idea of garden planning was borrowed from the legendary baby shower. Its tiers descend very beautifully and picturesquely from the mountain peaks to the sea coast.

At the very top you can see representatives of the Himalayan flora, and at the foot - plants of the Mediterranean zone. Between them are tiers dedicated to New Zealand, Australia, North America, Japan, Mexico and Transcaucasia.

If you find yourself in Batumi, be sure to visit Batumi beach and take a walk around City embankment.

The 5 km long beach, strewn with small pebbles, will delight you with beautiful scenery, cleanliness and emerald sea water. Here you can swim and sunbathe in comfort and coziness. And in the evenings, discos are often held here, where world-famous DJs work.

For lovers of active recreation during the day, there is plenty of entertainment on the beach and in the water, and for those who want to quietly admire the scenery and breathe in the sea air, it is better to come early in the morning.

The city's embankment runs 10 km along the seashore. This cozy, albeit very busy place has become a favorite for local residents and tourists of the city.

What to see in Batumi in 1 or 2 days. Routes on the map, coordinates, photos. Main attractions and non-tourist places.

Where to live in Batumi?

Batumi is an ancient city with a centuries-old history (it was mentioned by Aristotle and Pliny) and in the Old City history is literally in every brick and in every stone of the cobblestone streets. In order to fully experience the unique atmosphere of Batumi, and in addition, have a good rest on the beach, which literally “encircles” the historical part of the city, I would recommend renting an apartment or apartments in Batumi for daily rent - fortunately there is no shortage of them here - and at least for a short time feel like a local resident.

I can confidently recommend these amazing apartments in the very “heart” of old Batumi (Gorgasali Street), where we lived for two weeks in September 2018, and also apartment in one of the most beautiful mansions in the city, where I stayed for a few days in December of that year.

If you are planning your independent trip to Georgia or just a seaside holiday in Batumi, be sure to check out my selections and - here is only the most valuable information from my personal experience of numerous trips to Batumi over several years. In addition, in the article about apartments you will find a detailed story about how Old and New Batumi differ in terms of living, as well as what nuances you need to pay special attention to when searching for and renting an apartment “on the spot”.

What to see in Batumi in 1 day

For the convenience of readers, the article contains scalable maps of walking around Batumi - the numbers of attractions on the map correspond to their numbers in the table of contents and in the article itself. If you are interested in a specific place in Batumi, you can click on the name and go straight to its description and coordinates.

I suggest starting your walk through the most interesting places in the Old Town of Batumi from a busy intersection Chavchavadze streets And Gogebashvili, where one of the city's most popular attractions is located: cable car "Argo". By the way, almost next to its lower station there is one of the most suitable places to get acquainted with Georgian and Adjarian (Laz) cuisines: cafe "Samikitno Machakhela".

1. Batumi “Argo” cable car

The lower station of the cable car is located near the Batumi port on Gogebashvili Street. In the old days, a memorial to those killed in the Great Patriotic War was located on this site, but under Saakashvili, in the wake of the “de-Sovietization” of Georgia, it was dismantled - although they promised to restore it in another place. The upper station of the cable car is located on Mount Anuria, from where wonderful views of Batumi, the Black Sea and the Adjarian mountains open.

The Batumi cable car is equipped with brand new cabins from the Austrian company Doppelmayr, well known to all skiers. There are only nine cabins, each accommodating up to eight passengers, the total length of the cable car is 2586 meters.

Coordinates of the lower station: N41.64754, E41.64548.

2. Turkish Quarter and Orta Jame Mosque

Orta Jame Mosque- a material symbol of why, in fact, Adjara at one time received autonomy within Georgia. In general, ethnically Adjarians are the same Georgians who, under the influence of the Turks, converted to Islam. That is why Mikheil Saakashvili managed to return Adjara “to Georgia” relatively easily - because there was no harsh ethnic confrontation, as in the case of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The best way to get to the mosque is Kutaisi street from the center of the Old Town of Batumi. In this case, the minaret sticking into the sky will be visible at the very end of the street, and the city itself will look very similar to something Turkish or Arab.

Coordinates of the Horta Jame Mosque: N41.64871, E41.64383.

This part of Batumi is given a special flavor by the huge number of Turkish eateries with doners, lahmajuns, kokoreci and God knows what else. In general, Kutaisi Street is one of the most picturesque places in the city.

3. Piazza

Piazza- such an artsy “Italian” place, the result of the restoration of the city that took place during the time of Saakashvili.

Very similar to the “Italian” crafts in Las Vegas and Chinese Macau. That is, from afar it looks like it, but up close it’s a dummy. However, neither this nor the somewhat clumsy name (piazza in Italian means “square”) did not prevent Piazza from becoming one of the main tourist attractions of the Old Town of Batumi.

Coordinates: N41.6495, E41.64112.

4. Church of St. Nicholas

Church of St. Nicholas is very similar to Orthodox churches somewhere in Greece or Cyprus, which is not surprising - it was built 150 years ago by the Pontic Greeks.

It is one of the most beautiful churches in Batumi; services are conducted in two languages: Georgian and Russian.

Coordinates of the Church of St. Nicholas: N41.65026, E41.64137.

5. Armenian Church of Christ the Savior

Two communities - Armenian and Jewish - were registered in Batumi in the 1880s, but the Armenians managed to build their church before the synagogue.

In Soviet times, the church had a planetarium; after Georgia gained independence, it was closed and the church’s original functions were returned. Located at the intersection of streets Noah Jordania And Gamsakhurdia, coordinates N41.6497, E41.63911.

6. Batumi Circus

If you come on holiday to Batumi with children, this establishment will definitely help you entertain them. Performances usually start at 20:00, and in the summer there are mainly touring companies performing.

The ticket costs 10 lari. Address: st. Baratashvili, 23. Coordinates N41.64983, E41.63715.

7. Europe Square and Medea statue

At the edge of Europe Square stands a house with a “fairy-tale” tower and an astronomical clock:

Previously, the National Bank was located in it, but now the tower is empty, and the first floor is occupied by the Batumi Children's World. The clock on the tower, in addition to the time, also shows the sides of the horizon, phases of the moon, zodiac signs and much more.

Opposite the tower, on the corner of Konstantin Gamsakhurdia Street, there is a red-brown brick building (“Palace of Labor”) - before the “Rose Revolution” and the reintegration of Adjara back into Georgia, the residence of the local “appanage princeling” was located here. Aslana Abashidze, at that time the ruler of virtually independent Adjara. After his overthrow, interestingly, Abashidze fled to Russia, and not to Turkey, which was mentally and religiously close to Adjara.

Next door to Abashidze's former residence is House of the Government of the Republic of Adjara(a little closer to Teatralnaya Square), and opposite - constitutional Court.

Medea statue

Actually, it’s a paradox: in the center of Europe Square there is a statue of the heroine of the myth of the Argonauts, Medea, holding the Golden Fleece in her hands. The same fleece that was skillfully “wrung out” by a gang of thieves from the very Europe after which the square is named.

Apparently, the sheep skin stolen by the Greeks from the Georgians is an allegorical symbol of the result of Georgia’s integration into the European Union.

Medea statue coordinates: N41.65122, E41.63643.

Excursions in Batumi and Adjara from local residents

For curious and sociable travelers who want to get to know Batumi and its residents even better, I recommend booking a first-person city tour. Your guides will be local residents - journalists, photographers, historians and simply experts in their native places. Below is a selection of the most interesting and popular excursions in Tbilisi according to traveler reviews. To see all available options, click View All. At the booking stage, you will need to pay online only 20% of the excursion cost - the rest of the amount is given to the guide before it starts.

8. Memed Abashidze Street and Apollo Cinema

The street is named after the Georgian politician and public figure Memed Abashidze, repressed and executed in 1937.

Opposite the cinema, old photographs are placed on special stands, in which you can see what Abashidze Street looked like before the revolution.

If you are wondering what to do in Batumi in the evening: there are many casinos in the city, but if you are not a gambler, you can just go to the cinema. Sessions at Apollo are held in both Georgian and Russian - for example, in December 2018 there were two sessions in Georgian and three in Russian.

Apollo opening hours: first show at 12:00, last at 22:00. Ticket prices: 8,9 and 10 GEL. Address: st. M. Abashidze, 17. Coordinates N41.65153, E41.63836. Information - www.kinoafisha.ge.

9. Era Square (Theater Square)

On the eastern side of the square there is Theater named after Chavchavadze, because of him the square began to be called Theater.

There is a gilded copy in the center of the square Neptune statues from Italian Bologna. Before Neptune, there was a monument to Chavchavadze in this place, but now it has been moved behind the theater building.

Neptune statue coordinates: N41.65258, E41.63765.

10. Batumi Marine Station

An imposing building in the classic “Soviet-resort” style, its silhouette evokes memories of similar buildings in Crimea and Sochi.

Batumi sea terminal coordinates: N41.65213, E41.64373.

11. Chacha Tower

Clock tower in the Ottoman style, it was built according to the design of the French architect Raymond Charles Père - in appearance it resembles a small mosque with a clock and a yellow dome.

Chacha Tower

The most intriguing thing about it is that it is essentially a fountain: once a week, in accordance with a strictly secret schedule, chacha (strong Georgian grape vodka) flows from four pillars on the sides of the tower for 15 minutes - absolutely free. Some tourists and local residents try to calculate the time of the “chacha eruption”, but, as a rule, without success.

Chacha Tower coordinates: N41.6528, E41.64267.

12. Batumi seaport

Currently, only a harbor for boats and yachts remains on the site of the old seaport, and the coastal area has become part of the tourist walking area of Batumi. The cargo and passenger port was moved north - to the area of the Batumi oil refinery and the new railway station.

Seaport coordinates: N41.6537, E41.64308.

13. Park of Wonders

Actually, this is not even one attraction of the old city of Batumi, but several: batumi lighthouse, Ferris wheel, Alphabet Tower(or Alphabet Tower), moving sculptural composition “Ali and Nino”.

Stone chairs in the Park of Miracles

Coordinates of the lighthouse in Wonderland Park: N41.65594, E41.6411.

14. Tower with a mini Ferris wheel

This building has nautical motifs: the Ferris wheel at the very top is the steering wheel, above it is a stylized sail, and the high spire is the mast. Apparently, the architect took inspiration from the myth of Jason and his ship Argo.

Tradition and modernity :-)

In Batumi, many modern attractions are in one way or another connected with this ancient Greek myth: for example, the statue of Medea on Europe Square, or the Batumi cable car, which is called “Argo”. Initially, the building with a mini-ferris wheel was built for the University of Technology, then they decided to place a business center in it, and now they have stopped work altogether - and the construction appears to have already been completed.

Tower coordinates: N41.65414, E41.63674.

15. Primorsky Boulevard Batumi

From the Park of Wonders it extends several kilometers to the southwest Primorsky Boulevard is perhaps the main attraction of Batumi, containing a good dozen smaller attractions. This is not an avenue or a street in the traditional sense, but rather a landscaped area of land between the beach and residential areas.

16. Batumi Beach

The beach in Batumi is truly gigantic - it stretches from the lighthouse and the statue of Ali and Nino to the southwest and borders almost the entire city.

The most “swimming” places are located opposite and, the cleanest water is not far from the San Remo cafe at the junction of the Old and.

17. Rustaveli Avenue

The avenue runs parallel to the sea and the Batumi pedestrian Boulevard and is lined with respectable buildings with respectable cafes and restaurants on the ground floors. By the way, you can read more about where to eat in Batumi in my.

Rustaveli Avenue is notable for its palm trees - they were once given to the city of Batumi by the Arab Sheikh Nahyan Mubarak and they were planted on both sides of the roadway.

18. Church of St. Barbara

It was erected in 1888 with the support of Emperor Alexander III on the territory of a military hospital. During Soviet times, the church was used as a warehouse - in the 90s, the hospital building was demolished, and the temple was transferred to the Georgian Orthodox Church, and since then services have been conducted in the Georgian language. In 2015, another Georgian-style church was erected nearby - New Varvarinskaya.

Coordinates of the Church of St. Barbara: N41.65093, E41.63149.

19. Park 6 May, dolphinarium and zoo

Park 6 May is located southwest of the Seaside Park, behind Melikishvili Street - there is a colonnade-entrance on it.

Park entrance coordinates: N41.64838, E41.62973.

20. Adjara Museum

Museum of Adjara (Batumi Museum of Local Lore), st. Dzhincharadze, 4, coordinates N41.64728, E41.63324. The entrance ticket costs 3 GEL.

21. Museum of Art

Address Z. Gorgiladze, 8, coordinates N41.64857, E41.63395. The entrance ticket costs 2 GEL. Opening hours of the Museum of Art: Tue-Sun 11:00-18:00, closed Monday.

If you don’t want to go to the museum, you can just relax on the square with a pleasant park opposite, at the intersection of Asatiani and Gorgiladze streets.

22. Batumi Municipality

The building faces this square Municipality of Batumi— in Georgia, at the instigation of Saakashvili, these institutions began to be called City Hall.

Coordinates: N41.64835, E41.63517.

23. Batumi Synagogue

The synagogue was built in 1904 by the architect S. Volkovich, who took the Amsterdam and The Hague synagogues as a basis. In 1923 it was converted into a sports club - only in 1992 the synagogue was returned to the Jewish community of Batumi.

Address: st. Vazha Pshavela, between Gorgiladze and Tsar Parnavaz streets. Coordinates N41.64735, E41.63449.

24. Old railway station

At the beginning of this century, the “city fathers” decided that a station in the very center of Batumi was not needed, and they built a new one in the north-eastern part of the city, and a branch of the Tbilisi Bank was located in the old building:

Coordinates N41.64506, E41.63614.

25. Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The main Catholic church of Batumi was built in the neo-Gothic style in 1903 at the expense of the Zubalashvili brothers.

During the Soviet years, the church housed a laboratory for the study of high-voltage electricity, whose experiments gradually destroyed the building. Many representatives of the Georgian intelligentsia were in favor of stopping the research (among them, for example, was Konstantin Gamsakhurdia, the father of the first president of Georgia, Zviad Gamsakhurdia).

1. New Batumi

I propose starting the second day in Batumi with a tour of the so-called “New Batumi” - a part of the city that conventionally starts from Cafe "San Remo"(address Rustaveli, 34 - approximately in this place Rustaveli Avenue turns into Sherif Khimshiashvili street) and extends south approximately to the sculpture Where, against the backdrop of which everyone who gets to this part of Batumi must take pictures.

It is about this part of the city that we can rightfully say “Batumi is a city of contrasts.” Here, ultra-modern skyscrapers coexist with 9-story Soviet panel buildings, and the creations of the world's most fashionable architects intersperse with vacant lots.

View of New Batumi from the Tower restaurant tower

2. Catholic Basilica of the Holy Spirit

Located between the city center and the seaport (Gogebashvili St., 54). It was built in the late 90s and is visually very reminiscent of the modernist temples of South America, the work of Oscar Nemeyer and his followers (there are especially many of them in Brazil).

Straight lines, spacious and bright interior space - light enters through giant stained glass windows. Located at the northern entrance to the city (from Makhinjauri). Coordinates N41.64569, E41.64996.

Batumi Chorokh Airport is an international airport in Batumi serving both international and regional flights to northeast Turkey. The length of the airport's runway reaches 2,233 meters.

The airport terminal, opened in 2007, handles up to 600 thousand passengers annually. The terminal area is 3,915 square meters. Also in the same year, the airport building was expanded and modernized - a new control tower, airport, parking lots and taxiways were added to it.

The airport serves many airlines that fly to Ankara, Moscow, Istanbul, Kiev, Minsk, Yerevan, Tbilisi, Tel Aviv and others.

You can get to Batumi Airport every 40 minutes by bus, and the journey takes approximately 30 minutes.

Batumi beach

One of the main attractions of Batumi is the famous city pebble beach called “Batumi Beach”. Its length is about 5 kilometers, and its width varies from 30 to 55 meters. This is an amazing corner of nature that delights tourists with its beautiful landscapes, crystal emerald waters and ideal cleanliness. Here you will be offered umbrellas and sun loungers, as well as changing cabins and showers. Batumi Beach has a well-developed infrastructure; discos are held here almost every evening, the most popular of which are “Tarabua”, “Prozac” and “Coordinates 41/41”, where the world’s most famous DJs work. This place is perfect for a family holiday; the coastal depth is only 1-2 meters.

Fans of active pastime will be able to ride water skis and motorcycles, as well as catamarans and inflatable “Bananas”. It is not allowed to sell food or drinks on the beach, so bring everything you need in advance. The best time to visit Batumi Beach is early in the morning, when it is quiet and calm. You will be able to admire the sunrise and take beautiful photographs.

Batumi Dolphinarium

In the Georgian town of Batumi on the picturesque Black Sea coast there is the most famous dolphinarium in the country and the first in the entire Soviet Union. Since 1975, tourists from all over Georgia and other countries have been coming here, so tickets to the show must be purchased in advance. The cost of an adult ticket is 12 GEL.

Performances take place in a modern open-air water and entertainment complex. The pool is decorated with picturesque decorations, creating an atmosphere of wild nature. The auditorium resembles an amphitheater, protected from the sun and bad weather by an elegant glass dome.

As of 2011, the dolphinarium is home to 15 dolphins and 4 seals, which demonstrate amazingly beautiful and complex performances.

The Dolphinarium is open every day except Monday. Next to the dolphinarium there is a large aquarium, a zoo and a lake.

The Batumi embankment is located on the Black Sea coast in the city of the same name. Its length reaches 10 kilometers, along which construction work is being carried out to build a highway, which is reminiscent of the structure of the Cote d'Azur. There is a bicycle road stretching almost the entire length of the embankment; there are also small shops and cozy cafes.

Not far from the Batumi embankment there is a massive theater, in front of which there is a sculpture of a golden lion, a small fountain with erotic overtones, a striped Greek temple, an Italian square in the Venetian style, a minaret and much more. Hotels and inns are also being built along the embankment, and the raging waves of the surf will replace any music.

Port of Batumi

Batumi Sea Port is located in the southeast of the Black Sea. Its territory is about 22.2 hectares, of which the area of open warehouse premises occupies 16,412 square meters. Cargo operations and vessel docking are carried out at the port around the clock. It is equipped with the latest video surveillance system, which guarantees a high level of security. The infrastructure of the Batumi Sea Port includes berths, warehouses, transshipment mechanisms, intra-port roads and railways, port fleet vessels, repair shops, vehicles, a marine passenger terminal and water supply systems.

The port currently houses an oil terminal, a container terminal, a berth facility used to service ferries, as well as a dry cargo handling terminal and a passenger terminal. There are a total of 11 berths here. The port employs 726 highly qualified employees. Recently, the cargo turnover of the Batumi seaport has increased significantly. Today, 80 - 90% of total cargo turnover is accounted for by the transportation of petroleum products and oil.

Inguri hydroelectric power station

The Inguri HPP is a dam-diversion hydroelectric power station, the hydraulic scheme of which is based on the transfer of part of the flow of the Inguri River to the Eristskali River basin.

The Enguri hydroelectric power station was put into operation in 1978.

The height of the dam is 272 m.

The power plant capacity is 1300 MW.

Every year the station generates about 4.2 billion kW/h of electricity.

The Inguri hydroelectric power station is located on the territory included in the zone of the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict, and therefore it cannot be used more powerfully; the station is operated from both one country and the other.

In 1992, an agreement was concluded between the Georgian and Abkhaz sides on the distribution of electricity generation from the Inguri hydroelectric station in the proportion of 60% to 40%.

The operation of the hydroelectric power station revealed the presence of a number of technical problems, and already in 2004, Voith Siemens Hydro began work on the reconstruction of the hydroelectric power station, financing was from foreign loans and grants.

Work continues on the reconstruction of hydraulic units No. 1 and 5, which are planned to be completed in 2012-13, the cost of the work is €20 million, provided by the EBRD.

Seaside park in Batumi

At the site of the park there used to be a waste dump; almost the entire coastline was unsuitable for recreation. Thanks to all the efforts of the city residents, this place was put in order and became one of the amazing places in Batumi.

The very first project of the boulevard was developed by the famous German gardener Ressler. His project, after Ressler’s death, was brought to life by another famous gardener, D’Alfonso.

The wonderful Georgian gardener and decorator Iason made a huge contribution to the improvement of the garden.

Gordesiani, who successfully took an active part in decorating the London Botanic Garden.

Batumi Park has existed for more than a hundred years; city residents love it very much, as do numerous tourists. Here you can relax, visit numerous cafes and clubs, and there are also a large number of playgrounds and attractions for children. In the park you will see tennis courts where championships are held; in addition to the above, you can see a beautiful view of the sea.

The park has the famous singing fountains, which open to amazed visitors immediately upon entering the park. Sometimes you can see a rainbow above the solar fountains, this is indescribable beauty.

Batumi Park can be divided into old and modern parts.

On Lake Ardagan, in 2005, another singing fountain was built according to a French project. It is considered one of the most beautiful such fountains in Europe.

The boulevard itself consists of five parallel alleys, which are separated by classic lawns, as well as various cafes. In the first alley, which is called Magnolia, there is a pavilion where chess and backgammon lovers gather every day, as well as a Greek colonnade, today it is a kind of gateway to the park.

Makhuntseti Waterfall

Splashes of crystal clear and cold water, stunning mountain landscapes and an unforgettable aura - all this is the Makhuntseti waterfall, located 30 km from Batumi, in the mountainous Adjara region. It is believed that bathing in such “natural” souls has a healing and rejuvenating effect. Therefore, visiting this place: combining business with pleasure!

To see this creation of nature with your own eyes, you need to follow the road along the mountain river Acharistskali. In addition, you can look at the stone arched bridge Makhuntseti, crossing a mountain river. It was approximately built in the 12th century during the reign of Queen Tamara.

When you get to the Makhuntseti waterfall, you will find yourself among untouched nature and will be able to enjoy an amazing sight: icy mountain water falls menacingly from a twenty-meter height. At different times of the year, the waterfall will greet you in different ways: in the spring - with an impenetrable wall of water, in the summer - with a fountain of spray, illuminated by the rays of the sun. Under the waterfall there is a huge stone bowl, created by nature itself for taking healing baths. Not far from the waterfall there is an outdoor cafe where you can try real masterpieces of Georgian cuisine.
