Historical information

The city of Marmaris has a very long history. It is believed that it was founded no later than the 11th century BC. e. and was called Fiskos. Subsequently, the city was part of Hellenistic Greece, and at the beginning of our era it was annexed to the Roman Empire. After the collapse of the empire, Physkos was part of the Byzantine Empire for a millennium.

In 1391 it was conquered by the Ottomans and a few decades later it was finally annexed to the Ottoman Empire, after which it was renamed Marmaris (“shining”) in honor of the marble mined in its vicinity. Since the 80s of the 20th century, Marmaris has become important resort at the junction of the Aegean and Mediterranean seas.

Sights of the city and surrounding area - photos and descriptions

The sights of Marmaris are unlikely to surprise those who have visited other Turkish cities, but they will make an indelible impression on those who are just getting acquainted with the ancient and Ottoman heritage of Turkey.

Architectural structures

As in other cities on the Turkish coast, the main attractions of Marmaris remain ancient heritage.

However, even during the era of the Ottoman Empire, outstanding architectural structures were built here.

Religious buildings

The main attraction of the city's Muslim architecture is Ibrahim Agha Mosque, built at the end of the 18th century in the traditional Ottoman style.

Particularly attractive is the classic Ottoman minaret that rises high above the dome of the mosque.

A much older religious monument is located on Cleopatra Island. Now from ancient Temple of Apollo, dating from the early 1st century AD, only ruins remain. Despite this, they leave a colossal impression due to their majestic appearance.

Monuments

The monuments of Marmaris are somehow connected with by sea, like life in this resort town.

  1. Sculpture "Pearl" located at the entrance to Marmaris. It was erected in honor of the misconception that the city's name comes from the French phrase "Le Mar Maris", which literally means "pearl of the sea". Despite the obvious fallacy of this opinion about the origin of the city’s name, it is very popular among tourists and some local residents.
  2. Monument "To the Girl Who Meets Sailors" was recently installed on the Marmaris waterfront. The sculpture symbolizes the love and faith of those remaining on the shore and the anticipation of the sailors leaving their city. The composition represents a full-length figure of a girl with a bird located in her palm. The monument is decorated with an inscription by the Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet.
  3. Monument to the "father of all Turks" Mustafa Kemal Ataturk located on the city embankment. The monument symbolizes recognition of the merits and respect of the people of Turkey for the outstanding political figure of Turkey, who transformed the country from a destroyed empire into a modern secular state.
  4. Monument "Lovers" installed in the very center of the resort town near a small singing fountain. The monument represents a pair of lovers hugging and spreading their arms in different directions.

Museums

There are not many museums in Marmaris, but those that exist are truly worth a visit.

Main Museum Marmaris is located in the city fortress of the 16th century. The museum has 3 exhibition halls located in the fortress galleries. The first of them is dedicated to the former President of the Turkish Republic Kenan Evren, the second - to archaeological finds made in Marmaris and the surrounding area, the third - to the life and furnishings of a traditional Turkish house.

Private Museum of Ethnography and Archeology was opened in 2005 and is located in the city center. The creator of the museum is Ahmed Urkay, who sold oriental carpets in the city market for 40 years. It was carpets that made up the initial exhibition of the museum, which later expanded to include household items, ancient weapons, archaeological finds, manuscripts of the Koran and many other exhibits.

The undeniable advantage of this museum is the free entrance to it and the daily operation of the museum premises.

Natural objects

The nature of the Turkish sea coast impresses with its picturesqueness, beauty and diversity. And the city of Marmaris is no exception.

  • "Maiden braid" in the vicinity of the resort it is a narrow strip of sand stretching in the middle of Bozburun Bay. A beautiful and sad legend about two lovers who lived on the two shores of the bay is associated with the “Maiden Braid”, or Kus-Kumu Braid. Be that as it may, “Maiden’s Spit” remains one of the most beautiful places in Marmaris; here every tourist can feel what it’s like to walk on water.
  • One of the amazing places in Marmaris - Cleopatra Island, where the famous Egyptian queen met her lover, commander Mark Antony.

The island, also known as Sedir, has ruins of ancient buildings, and Cleopatra's beach is distinguished by its extraordinary sand, which, according to legends confirmed by scientists, was brought by Mark Antony from the Red Sea coast especially for Cleopatra.

  • Pirates Cave located on Hare Island near Marmaris. You can only get into the cave by water; it is best to use a small tourist boat. The pirates, of course, stored their stolen wealth in the cave, so every tourist can take part in an impromptu treasure hunt and even take it with them as a souvenir.

Also, lovers of natural attractions can visit waterfalls Sogut And Torgut, located near the resort, or go to the island of Nimera (Paradise Island), on which there is a cave of the same name.

What else to see?

Many trips are organized from Marmaris to the cities of the Turkish coast, including Bodrum or the famous Ephesus. However, even without buying an excursion and staying in the vicinity of Marmaris, you can get wonderful new experiences from independent hikes.

Where can you go on your own?

You can organize a self-guided tour of center Marmaris, examining the merits of the architecture. If you want more solitude with nature, then “Maiden’s Spit” is the most suitable place.

Icmeler It is only 7 km away from Marmaris, so you can reach it at a leisurely pace in just an hour and a half.

In this port city you can walk along the embankment, swim in the sea, which much cleaner than in Marmaris, or get lessons at a diving school, where every tourist will be taught how to dive to the seabed with scuba gear.

Excursions with children

Visit Factories of Dr. Lukum will make a lasting impression on children. After all, this is where the famous Turkish sweets are made.

A tour of the factory is conducted by Dr. Lukum himself, who even knows Russian.

At the end of the tour, all visitors will receive a free sweets tasting, after which everyone will want to buy the products of a small factory.

Another great place to relax with children in Marmaris - local Atlantis water park, located on the sea coast of the resort. Guests of the water park can ride on slides, including extreme ones, and a special children's area is open for younger visitors. The beach owned by the water park is open to all its visitors and does not require additional financial investments.

Look video about the attractions of Marmaris:

Marmaris is the favorite resort of our compatriots. It stands in a bay where two seas - the Aegean and the Mediterranean - merge. The lively and modern resort is also famous for its attractions:

Ashartepe

It is known that Marmaris stands where the ancient city of Physkos previously flourished. This archaeological center is perfectly preserved. This city was inhabited and ruled by everyone: Carians, Minoans, Rhodians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Ionians, Dorians, Macedonians, Syrians, Persians, Romans and Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans. That's why they left behind a lot of interesting things. This part of the city is located on top of a hill in the northern part of the resort.
Here you can admire the ruins of old walls, for example. By the way, it is believed that the inhabitants of Physkos had to destroy the city when the question arose of surrendering to Alexander the Great. How proud! Visit the “living part” of the museum – a luxurious garden with walking peacocks.

Sariana's Tomb

Once upon a time in the 16th century, a righteous woman named Sariana, who was also called the White-Skinned Mother, lived in Marmaris. She became famous thanks to her prophecies. It seems that the advice of a wise woman helped Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent to correctly calculate his actions and win multiple victories. For example, when the ruler was going to Rhodes, naturally, in order to capture it, he visited this Sariana. She blessed his insidious plans, and everything really went well. In general, the Sultan did not mind any palaces for such a fortuneteller, and when she died, he built a tomb for her in the northeastern part of Marmasis, on a hill behind the new mosque.

Caravanserai of the Sultan of Hafsa

This building is located in the historical part of Marmaris, in the Old Town. This is a place where travelers, soldiers and traders stopped to rest. A hotel, in short. This caravanserai was built here in 1545. The building is decorated with original painted arches on top - this is perhaps its most beautiful part. Inside the structure there are seven small rooms and one large one. Of course, today few people remember what a historical institution it really is, because there is a cafe, a restaurant and entertainment events.

Netsel Marina

These are the bays of Marmaris with an area of 366 square kilometers. That is, the territory is huge. This marina is located in the northern part of the bay. The 35 km long coastline has already become entrenched in the minds of tourists and locals as “Yacht Paradise”. Ships and yachts, including international ones, moor in this port - usually you can see up to 750 yachts off the coast - it looks incredible. From this marina, ships depart to the shores of Italy and Greece. The International Sailing Festival is also held here in mid-May, and in October you can become a spectator of the International Sailing Races.

This marina is also very crowded and noisy, even at night, because next to the port there is a famous street full of bars and clubs. The port is a 10-minute walk from the city center. If you come here during the day, visit the shopping center, which sells clothes, shoes, and yachting equipment. And, of course, on this line you can sit in one of the nice fish restaurants.

Marmaris Fortress (Marmaris Kalesi)

This fortress is located in the center of the peninsula, on a rock. The chronicles of Herodotus say that this castle was built by the Ionians in 3000 BC. One day, Alexander the Great attacked the city and surrounded the castle. The residents did not hesitate to set fire to the castle, choosing such a fate for the powerful structure - better than if the fortress had ended up in the hands of the enemy. At the beginning of the 16th century, Sultan Suleiman the First ordered the castle to be restored. After this, the castle became an important military base for the Ottoman Empire's navy. During the First World War, the fortress was severely destroyed after shelling by the French army. But in the 79th year of the last century, it was decided to restore the fortress. Thus, the castle was ready by 1991. Nowadays there is a museum there. In the courtyard of the fortress there is an archaeological gallery, inside there is an ethnographic part. In total, the fortress building contains seven galleries. The largest of them houses an exhibition hall. By the way, one of the exhibitions is dedicated to the 7th President of Turkey, Kenan Evren - in this gallery you will look at his awards and gifts, as well as important documents. Another room displays ancient artifacts. The third part is presented in the form of a traditional Turkish house. Also in the fortress there are several ancient cannons, stone cannonballs and massive anchors. The place is extremely significant for the city and for all of Turkey. Cultural events are often held inside the castle. And it’s just great to climb up there and admire the views of the port, bay and town.

Ibrahim Pasha Mosque (Ibrahim Aga Camii)

This mosque is located in the Kemeralti region. True, it is about 20 km from the center of Marmaris, but the trip is worth it. The mosque is named after its architect, Ibrahim Pasha. It was built towards the end of the 18th century. The building was built according to all the canons of Ottoman architecture, although with some modified elements. Therefore, the building looks somewhat unusual.

Marmaris Quay

This street stretches for 4 kilometers, 20 meters from the water. On the street you can see a number of restaurants and clubs. Walking along this alley is a pleasure, because the views here are stunning. The street does not calm down for a minute. Well, maybe in the morning, when all the discos have already ended and all the tourists have gone to their hotels to sleep. At night, this street shines with all the lights, probably brighter than any other in this part of the coast.

Cleopatra Island

The island is located 18 km from Marmaris. The frame is about 5 meters wide and 50 meters long. There is a legend that Mark Antony gave this island to his beloved, Cleopatra, 2000 years ago. But the queen did not like the sand on the island. Then Mark Antony brought special sand from North Africa to please her. In general, all the guides will tell you that two lovers spent hot nights on this new sand. One way or another, the sand here is really exactly the same as in the north of Egypt. Snow-white, with grains of sand like pearls. You can’t even go to the beach with shoes on, and you have to wash them off when you leave. Also on the island there is a temple of Apollo and an ancient amphitheater, now ruins. The sea here is also wonderful, clean, you can see everything three meters deep.

It took me a long time to gather my thoughts and write this review. But more than a year has passed since I visited sunny Turkey for the first time. But finally I got around to it and wrote this review.

In 2013, in the summer, my friend and I decided to rush to Turkey. Spontaneous decision. Almost until the trip itself, we weren’t exactly sure that we would succeed. But it worked.

I chose the hotel and vacation spot. This was my first trip to Turkey and I wanted it to be memorable for the rest of my life. So, my requirements for the resort were as follows:

  1. Proximity to all popular excursions;
  2. Lack of a large number of “Russian tourists”;
  3. Beautiful area around;
  4. More places for entertainment;
  5. The sea would be nearby.

Quite a lot of requirements and a very limited budget (the fact that we have only been non-students for just a year greatly influenced our financial situation)

But I was lucky, I found an inexpensive three-star hotel in the city of Marmaris. Marmaris is a beautiful city. It is located right between two seas (Mediterranean and Aegean) in a quiet and calm bay. The views of the city are amazing. He's great. The tourist area stretches right along the coast. So most of the hotels there are located on the first beach line. The sea is calm and warm, the waves are few and low.

There are both paid beaches with equipped sun loungers (however, if you are single girls, consider these beaches free. Without any conditions or tricks, by the way.), and sandy city beaches, without amenities, but free.

There are majestic hotels on the shore. Calm and sleepy during the day, glowing with all the colors of the rainbow at night. A little further from the shore there is a residential area. Local residents and visiting workers live here. Small bright houses, narrow streets, flowers in pots on the streets, sloping red tile roofs, stone pavement. All this is more reminiscent of a European resort town somewhere in Spain, Italy or Greece.

The city also has a small yacht club and port. During the day you can walk along the pier, admire the luxurious two-story yachts and small modest boats. And sometimes huge cruise ships, clumsy and shining in the sun, sail into the port. A majestic sight, I tell you.

We should also talk about Bar Street. This is Barov Street. It stretches right along the coast for a couple of kilometers, no less. There are more than a hundred different entertainment venues overlooking the sea. There are places for every taste here. Restaurants, small bars, noisy cafes. Everything your heart desires. There are also clubs, about ten of them. To them, free buses are organized from almost every hotel or excursion street stall, at about ten in the evening. They are free, of course, for a reason. And on the condition that you spend at least half an hour in the club to which you will be brought. And then leave if you don’t like it.

Excursions

The great advantage of Marmaris is that it is very close to all popular excursions. For example, I’ll take a two-day excursion from Ephesus to Pamukale. Instead of frying on a bus for 6-8 hours, like tourists from Alanya, tourists from Marmaris travel to Ephesus for 3 hours, with all stops. And back is also faster. It's not annoying. A two-day excursion is already very exhausting.

What excursions are worth paying attention to? If this is your first time in Turkey and you don’t know which excursion is the most interesting, the first excursion you should purchase will be Ephesus-Pamukale. It's for two days, don't be alarmed. There are also one-day ones - separately Ephesus and separately Pamukale. But they are less profitable. Why exactly two days? Because Ephesus and Pamukale are not far from each other. And both of these Turkish attractions are worth seeing at least once in your life. Ephesus is the remains of an ancient Greek city, still majestic even in ruins. Just imagine that several thousand years ago in this place people who believed in Artemis and Zeus led a hectic life, it will take your breath away. Very atmospheric and educational. It’s a pity that a city made of stone in 40-degree heat is not always conducive to looking at it. I think there is something to see there in winter. And in the summer you grasp the thread of the guide’s narrative, look at the beauty with one eye, while the other eye is filled with sweat. With one hand you wipe away this sweat, with the other you quickly take a few pictures for memory. And here you need to run again to another beauty. Tiring, but wonderful.

With Pamukale it’s a little different. If you are lucky enough to get there in the morning, immediately run to admire Pamukale, feel the warm limestone and thermal springs with your bare feet and be amazed at the cognitive dissonance - like a white mountain, like an icicle, but not slippery and not cold.

Take photos and only then can you go to explore Hieropolis - another ancient city. There is less left of it than of Ephesus, but there is something to see.

Dalyan is also good, a trip on a large boat along the river through picturesque places. In addition, you will be fed blue crabs (for a fee) and taken to healing mud. Not that I believe in their healing properties (my back was terribly covered after them), but mud is fun and you can take cool photos.

But I don’t really recommend a boat tour of the islands. Nothing interesting, cheap all-inclusive alcohol and a lot of people drinking it. And yes, a couple of islands, some of which won’t even let you in.

If you are planning to buy excursions from your travel agency, I do not recommend it. Expensive, and they will also deliver it along the way to 100,500 stores, where everything costs prohibitively.

We took excursions to a street shop near our hotel. There are a dime a dozen of such shops, at every turn. There is a lot of competition, so you can easily negotiate the price. Prices after good bargaining differ from Tourage's prices by 2-3 times less!!!

There is no need to be afraid, nor should you listen to scary tales from travel agency representatives. No one will leave you anywhere, they will show and tell you everything, and they will provide you with a Russian-speaking guide.

By the way, in every excursion shop at least one seller speaks Russian perfectly, so don’t worry.

Things to do in the city

But even without excursions, there is something to do in Marmaris. For example, take a walk along the main street, go to the local market, and bargain with the sellers. Take a look at the local attractions - various fountains and sculptures. We never got to the symbol of Marmaris - the pearl, which is located at the entrance to the city - it’s far away. But we visited the Singing Fountains show. Let me tell you, it's worth seeing at least once. Very beautiful, bright and bewitching. Jets of water dancing to the music, illuminated in all sorts of colors, are a magnificent sight.

You can also walk through a cool shopping center, run to Burger King or McDonald's (they are everywhere here) to eat ice cream, sit in a local cafe and drink a delicious and fresh juice or slush (finely crushed ice and juice). Or you can not go anywhere and lie by the pool.)))

The city also has several decent water parks. I think both children and adults will enjoy this entertainment.

In addition, Marmaris has its own concert hall, where local pop stars sometimes come and where they stage various performances in the traditional style.

I highly recommend going to the hammam, the national sauna-steam room. You can go to any hammam, of which there are many around the city, and just pay for the entrance, or you can buy a tour there, the procedures are the same, but you will be taken comfortably by bus. Why in the first days? Because hammam is not only an unrealistic relaxation, but also an excellent peeling of the whole body, promoting an even, beautiful and long-lasting tan.

If you are offered foot peeling with fish as an additional service, do not refuse, it is not only pleasant, but also useful. And unrealistically unusual, will be remembered for a long time. The point is that you put your feet in the aquarium, and many fish that are there begin to eat the dead skin from your feet.

Tourists

There are fewer Russian tourists in Marmaris than in Alanya. Of all the tourists, there are 20-30 percent of them here. For me this is a plus. Most of all, this resort is liked by Europeans (many Germans), there are also many Turkish vacationers themselves, and I also saw many African-Americans or Afro-Europeans (they did not introduce themselves). In general, Marmaris is a kind of Babylon. Dozens of languages and nationalities. If you love this and are tired of seeing only Russians everywhere, Marmaris is for you.

But how nice it is to meet a Russian person in Marmaris.)))

But! You need to know English. At least be able to connect “Be” and “Me” into one sentence. The downside of this more European resort is that not everyone here knows Russian. No one in our hotel knew him. Therefore, we were very amused by their attempts to express themselves in Russian. Probably, like them, our attempts to express ourselves in Turkish.)))

In the stores, no one speaks Russian, even less so, but you can bargain on your fingers.

To be honest, I know English well, in terms of reading and understanding. But I haven’t practiced speaking it yet. So that's the practice. During the 11 days of rest, I spoke so much English that it literally made me sick.

And speaking in broken English to a Turk who tells you something in the same broken English - believe me, it’s fun until you try. And don't repeat this 100 times.

Marmaris Hotels

I can’t count how many terrible reviews I’ve read about Turkey’s three stars. Broken capacitors, cockroaches, poor food, burnt alcohol, dirt in the rooms.

I don't know, maybe we were lucky. But we got a very nice and clean room, which was cleaned every day. There was free Wi-Fi, the Conder worked like a charm, the TV showed everything regularly, there was toilet paper and shower gel in the bathroom, towels were washed, bed linen was changed, the room even had a refrigerator, and there were nice wicker chairs and a table on the balcony. By the way, the pool was also excellent, the hotel corridors had carpets and the elevator never broke down.

The hotel is three-star and very inexpensive, by the way.

Our friends from other hotels were also happy with their temporary homes.

Nightlife of Marmaris

If during the day Marmaris looks like an ordinary southern town. The scorching sun, people lazily wandering somewhere, the heat. That evening he is transformed. Many neon signs light up, music of various styles flows from every home. And on the street, out of nowhere, crowds of people appear. Some people go shopping (shops here are open until one or two in the morning), some go to have fun in a cafe or club, and some just go out for a walk and breathe in the warm, pleasant night air.

If you go out onto Bar Street, you will be caught in a whirlwind instantly. Here the animators invite you to go to a cafe and have a cocktail, they dance some kind of exotic dance on stage, your favorite song sounds from somewhere and you go there, get lost in the crowd and are carried on.

In Marmaris you need to go somewhere purposefully. To the club, then to the club. Which one? Variety interferes with choice. Such diversity often even leads to a slight stupor.

We decided to go through all the clubs that are there. We did it. To be honest, there are clubs for every taste. They take you to the biggest and poppiest ones on free buses and hand out flyers for a free cocktail. Nice. But we discovered a couple of smaller and more interesting clubs, and we only went there. Sometimes on foot (not far, a kilometer and a half), sometimes by bus.

It is worth warning girls - do not drink free cocktails from suspicious persons, it will cost you more. They'll mix in something else. But this is true everywhere.

Clubs in Marmaris for every taste. There is a club purely for Russians, with Russian songs. There are big clubs with crowds of people and popular music. There are small clubs of various types, there are clubs for very young people (up to 19-20 years old), there is the Airenby club (wonderful, by the way, I recommend it, although I don’t listen to such music in my life, but it’s so incendiary). In general, there is plenty to choose from.

Drinks in clubs are not cheap. However, right opposite the clubs there are street bars where they sell various shots at bargain prices. And a kind bartender also gives nice bonuses. Don't be afraid, no one has been poisoned there yet.

Girls have free entry everywhere, but guys can be charged a symbolic amount.

For those who don't like crowds, there are cafes. In some you can also dance, but in a narrower circle. There are also quiet restaurants for those who are completely tired of the noise and hubbub.

Locals

Oh, and annoying, and sometimes vulgar. All the locals work exclusively for tourists. Every second person is tattooed to death, piercings and stylishly gelled hair are also not uncommon. If you're a single girl, watch out. They won’t pester you too much, but nevertheless, every third person will intrusively offer to meet you. Do you know what the most popular phrase came from my lips in Turkey - “No, thanks”. One evening I stopped at a store on Bar Street to drink water, and there was a line of people waiting to invite me to a club or for a walk. On the one hand it’s pleasant, but on the other hand it’s somehow disgusting.

Some comrades make vulgar compliments, make utter nonsense, mixing Turkish, English and Russian. And yes, they somehow magically identify Russian girls and stick to them. Sometimes it gets pretty boring.

And by the way, not one of them called me Natasha. It’s kind of a shame.))) It seems they’ve now learned a couple more names.)))

But if you quickly pass by and politely refuse, they fall behind.

But with sellers it’s worse. These cling like leeches, sometimes they can follow you a hundred meters and offer their goods. That's who doesn't understand refusals. And how much they love to bargain is beyond words.

Although, not everyone is like that. There are very adequate personalities with whom it is pleasant to talk. But rarely.

What to buy in Marmaris

To get started, change your money to lira (the local currency) right away. All calculation takes place in them. Well, that is, sellers will happily take dollars from you, but they may shortchange you, since the lira-dollar exchange rate is different everywhere.

I won’t talk about trinkets and cosmetics - all this is expensive and only if you have a strong desire to please your friends. Various magnets, key chains, jewelry and supposedly natural creams are everywhere.

Turkish sweets are good, but not in boxes, but by weight.

I won’t say anything about outerwear; I wasn’t interested.

If you go on an excursion and are taken to an onyx factory, you can look for something for yourself. Souvenirs made from solid beautiful stone are not cheap, but valuable.

Textiles in Turkey are excellent. But you’re not going there to bring home an extra suitcase with pillows and blankets?)))

As for food and groceries, look for supermarkets. They are relatively inexpensive and everything is there.

If you drink beer, be sure to try the local canned Efes Pilsen. Great beer. But I don’t recommend Marmara.

You can also buy packaged or canned juices. Better than in Russia, and also at a price. The chocolate is also excellent, no match for Russian.

They even sell plastic cups, we found out.))))

Fruits are as expensive as in Russia. But we drove past orange and pomegranate plantations many times.

In general, if you want to visit an almost European resort for little money. If you don't want to walk for an hour to the sea. If you like to go to clubs and cafes in the evenings. If you don't like long trips and don't buy excursions because of this. Then Marmaris, this wonderful picturesque city, is for you.

Do you love Turkey? I admit, for some reason I never wanted to go to this country. But at the beginning of May we visited Turkish Marmaris, and I completely changed my mind! Marmaris is a fairy tale! This is the city where you want to return!

So, at the end of April, as usual, I began to dream about the sea... We went to... managed to buy cheap tickets and accommodation. But this year there was no way to get an inexpensive flight.

Tour to Marmaris from Ufa

According to all estimates, it turned out that it would cost us the least. I started looking for information about which resort to go to. Based on the pictures, I liked Marmaris the most, but Internet experts did not advise going there in May, because... there are winds and the eternally cold Aegean Sea. But I didn’t have the heart for other cities, and I decided to look for a hotel in this Turkish city. And I didn’t regret it for a minute!

I bought the tour online from my favorite one. I don’t like paying commissions to travel agents, so going to a travel agency was not considered initially. We flew through the tour operator Anex Tour. Flight there on May 5 at 7 pm, back on May 12 late in the evening. Cost – 71 thousand rubles. (All inclusive for two adults and two children aged 8 and 14 years), 4 star hotel.

Why did I buy a tour through an intermediary, and not through the Anex Tour website?

Firstly, because the price here was cheaper (though not much). Secondly, when purchasing tours, points are accumulated, and then they can be spent on other tours, no matter which operator you fly from. Points are also given for reviews, surveys, etc. Thirdly, I like their service. There are many different reviews about Travelata on the Internet - both good and bad, but personally they have never let me down.

Ufa — Dalaman

We got to Ufa, as always, by car, which we left in the airport parking lot.

We flew by Azur, approximately 4 hours. The plane was not bad, the crew was polite, takeoff and landing were smooth. They fed us quite well, by the way. True, we weren’t very lucky with the passengers; one tipsy guy, either from Sterlitamak or from Ishimbay, tried to find a partner for his vacation, but he couldn’t succeed... And the whole plane was forced to watch this))

The closest airport to Marmaris is Dalaman. We arrived there around 9 pm. By the time we got off the bus, by the time we got our luggage, by the time we were assigned to buses, it was already eleven o’clock. We sat down and finally went. At first the guide told us something about Marmaris, but then she decided not to disturb our sleep)) She said that on the way we would stop at a cafe for a snack. Honestly, I wanted to get to the hotel faster, because... We ate on the plane, and we also took food with us.

The bus was large, with reclining seats, TVs and air conditioning. True, the TVs weren’t showing, the air conditioner just above our seats wouldn’t turn off and was so hot that we had to put on jackets and hoods, and the seat in front of us couldn’t be fixed at all and the stern Chelyabinsk man was almost lying on his husband’s lap =))

According to local time it was late evening, according to ours it was already night, so everyone wanted to sleep. But that same tipsy guy (as luck would have it, he was traveling on our bus) stubbornly couldn’t sleep, and all the way he pestered the Chelyabinsk resident sitting in front of us with his conversations. Although he was stern, he was very polite, so he tried to answer something, despite closing his eyes))

We didn't stop at the cafe. This became clear when the central street of Marmaris appeared outside the window.

The guy jumped to the guide indignantly and began to say that this should not be done! Okay, but the children on the bus are hungry! Yeah of course! If the children wanted anything at this moment, it was to sleep! The guide promised that at each hotel she would ask us to be fed. Although it was clear that no one would feed anyone at night. I suspect that the guy was upset)) Although I can’t say for sure, because... he was unloaded at another hotel))

Hotel

Our hotel was fourth on the list; it took about two hours to drive from the airport. The serpentines that everyone is talking about were not noticed. Compared to Sochi, these are not serpentines at all))

We checked in quickly, there was even a Russian-speaking guy at the reception. He gave us the key to the safe and the room and the Wi-Fi password, and we finally went to the room.

I won’t tell you much about the hotel and the room, because... I plan to write a separate article. Let me just say that I chose according to several criteria:

  • Good food with meat (for my three boys)
  • Green area (for me)
  • Good service (for everyone)
  • Availability of a swimming pool (for children). There were already two of them in the hotel

The last point is solely for the sake of the sons, because... My husband and I don’t like pools at all.

I’ll say right away that all expectations were met (I was guided by reviews on the Internet, by the way). The food was simply amazing! The service is also excellent, and the view from the restaurant is absolutely something! There were some minor disadvantages, of course, but the advantages more than outweighed them.

View from the restaurant

In general, this was our first time traveling on an all-inclusive basis. Before this, the maximum we took was a hotel with breakfast. One of the significant disadvantages of All inclusive for my husband and I personally is that the children cannot be taken away from the hotel for a long time))) Moreover, considering that there was a swimming pool and really delicious food. Never had any stomach problems! Of course, I didn’t eat everything, but my children and my husband didn’t deny themselves anything))

Marmaris: where to go? Entertainment and excursions 2018

Marmaris is amazing in terms of nature! Photos and reviews from the Internet also did not deceive! We were completely pleased with the resort!

In general, Marmaris is a city of parties. There is even a street called Barov Street. At night, it seems to me that no one sleeps here. There are bars, restaurants and cafes everywhere. Some sing, some dance, some watch sports matches. There are a lot of sports bars in general! In short, this is paradise for nightlife lovers! Many hotels even take their guests to bars and give them a free drink. The main thing is to stay there for at least an hour. True, we are not amateurs, we didn’t go...

But there is also something to do during the day!

The embankment is full of all kinds of water activities - bananas, parachutes, buns, etc.

pleasure boat

At the beginning of Marmaris there is a port where there are a lot of ships on which you can sail or go on an excursion.

We rode on a ship called Mama Mia - from 10 am to 5 pm. The program included lunch, drinks, alcohol (we took without it), swimming in the open sea, a market in Turunc, shows, competitions and a foam disco.

It was fun, the team really tried)) My husband, however, doesn’t really like loud music and dancing) But otherwise everything is really good. I’ll also tell you separately later.

You can take any excursion from your hotel guides, but their prices are inflated. And so, in Marmaris there are points on every corner where you will be offered excursions for every taste. Moreover, the guys there speak excellent Russian, even the Turks! Prices vary, many end up offering discounts, especially for children.

The most popular excursions in Marmaris in 2018:

  • Aegean Islands
  • Dalyan
  • Cleopatra Island
  • Pamukkale
  • Jeep Safari
  • Confluence of two seas
  • Diving
  • Safari by jeep or quad bike

Of course, we couldn't help but take bike rental, because this is our favorite pastime on vacation! An hour's rental cost from 10 liras. But we rented from morning until evening, for four it cost 120 liras, i.e. 1800 rub. (450 rubles per person). Compared to Sochi, it’s very cheap!

For cyclists, Marmaris is a paradise! The bike path runs throughout the city, and along the embankment you can get from the very beginning of Marmaris (from the seaport) to Icmeler! There is a gorgeous beach and prices at the clothing market are cheaper))

In general, it deserves a separate story. This is a small resort located 8 km from Marmaris. Compared to Marmaris, there is a large beautiful beach! And there are mountains around! Such beauty! There are beaches with sun loungers, and some without. We went where they were not.

By the way, before reaching Icmeler (if you drive along the embankment), there is another beach where volleyball nets are installed. One time the four of us played there, and another time the eldest son played in a team with the British, Russians and someone else. It was funny how they shouted to each other in different languages while playing! =)

It takes an hour to an hour and a half to walk from our hotel to Icmeler, depending on which beach. You can also take the orange dolmus (minibus). The fare costs 3 lira, the ride takes 5-7 minutes. But this, of course, is the time from our hotel. If you live in the center of Marmaris, then probably 20 minutes.

One day we went to Icmeler, but there was no sitting on the beach, and we decided to see what was next... We found some abandoned buildings, went up, and admired the beauty.

And we even saw a live turtle! The children were delighted!

Then we found something like observation deck, from where you can see an incredible view and see a piece of the horizon! It must be said that in Marmaris you will not see the usual endless sea, because the horizon is blocked by islands.

We rode bicycles in the other direction - to Central Marmaris, then through the port, through the Netsel Marina entertainment complex, and then to Millie Park.

Port Marina

Milli Parki is a place for those who want to be in the coolness and silence of the forest. We even saw a water turtle there! By the way, few people know about him, I’ll also tell you separately.

Millie Park

Also in Marmaris you can take car rental, but the pleasure is quite expensive - about 50 dollars per day. Plus gasoline, which in Turkey is even more expensive than ours: 1 liter costs around a dollar. That’s why many people here drive diesel, it’s a little cheaper. Mostly they offer rentals of Dacia Logan (this is like our Renault Logan).

We got into a conversation with one rental car and asked how the local traffic police treats tourists in rented cars. According to him, police officers in Turkey are those people who are welcome everywhere. They work solely to keep order and help people, and not to ruin their lives. If you don’t know the way, you’ve run out of gas, you have health problems, find the police and they’ll help you. He also told us that he was very surprised when he was in the Krasnodar region and heard that Russians were scaring children with the police)) In general, guys, we only dream about this))

Almost all cars in Marmaris, especially the local ones, are quite old. There are very few cool cars like ours. Most generally ride scooters.

There is also a water taxi here. For example, you can sail from Marmaris to Icmeler.

Water taxi

In Marmaris there is water park and dolphinarium. They are also sold at tour desks, but I don’t see the point in purchasing tickets there. Both the first and second can be reached on foot from anywhere in Marmaris. Well, or take a minibus (3 liras) and buy a ticket on the spot. And it’s cheaper, and you don’t depend on anyone.

The Dolphinarium is located right in the sea, you need to go towards Icmeler.

The water park is on the other side, closer to the center. At the beginning of May it was still closed.

One evening we went to the Singing Fountains. We walked from the hotel for about an hour, but that’s almost running)) And it took about an hour and a half.

The fountains start singing at 9 pm and until 9-30. Beautiful! But in Adler, to be honest, it’s a little better. In any case, it’s worth a visit, especially if you haven’t seen one like this before.

They say that it is still worth visiting the old part of Marmaris, it is somewhere behind the market. There is a ruined fortress there, and above there is a cafe with an amazing view of the port. But we never made it there...

Market in Marmaris

The market in Marmaris is open only two days a week. If I'm not mistaken, this is Thursday and Sunday. Therefore, on Thursday we decided to go for local fruits, in particular oranges, because... It was just the season. Of course, the hotel provided plenty of oranges, but we wanted to bring them home - real, Turkish ones! Even the children said that the taste there is completely different!

The market is just that: a market. One is trying to buy cheaper, the other is trying to sell more expensive, and even deceive)) In the end, we managed to buy oranges for 1 lira (15 rubles) per kilogram, and we finally brought them home!

You can get to the bazaar on a blue dolmus; you need to go to the Armutalan district. Tell the driver the code word “Pazar”))

For prices, watch the video above. They say that it is better to go to the market after 5 pm, because... prices are lower.

Shops in Marmaris

The most famous and widespread supermarket in Marmaris is Migros. As we understand, this is something like our Magnet)) You can buy everything there - from fruits to toys. Prices are reasonable. We bought everyone rubber slippers for 10 liras (150 rubles), because... For some reason we didn’t take them from home.

From clothing stores we went to LC Waikiki, Koton, MGM Outlet (they have everything, not just things). Prices are not at all more expensive, and in some places even cheaper than in Russia. I didn’t have time to buy anything, and the children wouldn’t have appreciated it, so I just made a video for you. True, my flash drive with all its contents was lost, and not everything was recovered. Therefore, I will post what I find later.

There are also LTB (men's and women's clothing) and Defacto (clothing for the whole family) stores in Marmaris, but I have not been to them.

In addition, throughout the main street of Marmaris there are a lot of all kinds of shopping stalls where you can buy absolutely everything! But here you need to be able to bargain, because... prices are inflated from the start. Although there are those where prices are written, and sometimes they are even lower than in supermarkets.

Money in Marmaris

We paid in Turkey with lira or dollars. They took dollars with them, and liras were withdrawn from an ATM at Deniz Bank. This is a subsidiary of Sberbank, so no commission is taken there. The rate at the ATM was 15.62 rubles. for 1 lira. The dollar at that time was 62.5 rubles.

You can also pay in euros, but we didn’t have them. In general, they think like this: 1 euro = 5 liras, 1 dollar = 4 liras. They don't take rubles))

In supermarkets you can pay by card, the conversion will happen automatically. We didn't do that. If you pay in dollars in a store, they give you change in liras. This was the case in Migros, for example. The course is hanging on the wall, but I didn’t remember it, unfortunately. But normal))

Beaches and sea in Marmaris

As for the beaches, in Marmaris they are almost everywhere narrow and completely filled with sun loungers. Some belong to hotels, in some you can rent a sunbed for a fee, in others you just buy a drink and they give you a seat.

There are not many beaches without sun loungers, but they do exist. Personally, when we didn’t have time to go to Icmeler, we found these.

Sometimes they took a folding fishing rod with them and fished from the bridge of one of the nearby hotels. Nobody chased us :)

We fished for bread and chicken. I only caught small change for bread, but I managed to catch quite a big fish with chicken:

They caught it only for sport, and all the fish were released immediately.

The shore is different - somewhere there is sand, somewhere there are small pebbles, somewhere there is a mixture of both. The entry into the water is gentle. And the water in the Aegean Sea is ideal! Clean, transparent! A simple fairy tale!

Is it possible to swim in Turkey in May? What's the weather like?

I can't say for sure. Depends on the year. In 2018, as the locals told us, the spring was warm and the sea warmed up. Therefore, the water was much warmer than in. I will say more - you could swim calmly and not tremble. The only thing is that for the first two days it periodically rained from the sky, but even on these days we had time to swim. And the children were ready not to get out of the pool at all, although it was not heated in our hotel.

As for the temperature, it was very warm! Yes, the first two days we wore jeans and windbreakers in the evening, but then it was warm even at night. The temperature stayed around 22-26 degrees. At the same time, it was very hot in the sun, we even got burned.

Even in bad weather it is very beautiful here!

Before our arrival (i.e. in April), the heat was 30 degrees for two weeks. And after leaving, the temperature rose to 31-34. Honestly, I can’t imagine how to relax during the season, because you really can’t go anywhere during the day. And sitting in a hotel or sleeping is not our option at all. Therefore, we are glad that we did not fall into the thick of it!
