Where is Changi Airport? How to get from Singapore Changi Airport to the city center. Rent a car in Singapore

The international rating agency Skytrax has already published a rating of the Top 100 best airports in the world for 2017. Once again, Singapore Changi Airport confidently ranks first. If you look at the lists of winners in this nomination for the entire time of its existence, starting in 1999, then Changi takes first place for the eighth time. Traditionally, 3 major world airports compete for the position of leader: Singapore Changi, South Korean Incheon and Hong Kong International Airport, and Changi has never fallen below third place, which it took only once, in 2009.

It is worth noting that Changi Airport became the winner for the fifth time in a row, not losing leadership to its rivals since 2013. Previously, it took first place in the Top 100 in 2010, 2006 and 2000. Throughout the history of the air port Singapore has received over 280 different awards.

Historical reference

By the mid-1970s. Singapore authorities were faced with the fact that all three airports operating at that time could not cope with the rapidly growing passenger traffic: Seletar, Kallang and Paya Lebar. Expanding and modernizing them was very problematic due to the high cost, and all projects to improve them were rejected. The search for a suitable territory began, and the choice was made in favor of the territory of the old air base with an area of 52 thousand square meters. m. The land plot was ideally suited for the construction of an airport, because allowed the construction of new terminals in the future.

The prospect of expanding the airport by reclaiming land became a decisive factor, because In those years, the number of passenger air transportation increased sharply. If in 1970 the number of people visiting Singapore increased from 300 thousand to 1.7 million people, then by 1975 passenger traffic increased to 4 million people a year. An additional advantage was the possibility of creating runways in such a way that planes took off and landed from the sea, whereas in old airports they literally flew over people's heads and residential areas.

In 1981, Changi's first single-runway terminal began serving flights from all over the world, and construction of a second terminal began at the same time, as... passenger traffic by the end of 1981 exceeded 8 million people. Terminal 2 was put into operation in 1991. In 1999, construction began on the third terminal, which began operating in 2008. Changi's throughput capacity reached 70 million people per year. Before this, in 2006, for the first time in Southeast Asia, Changi Airport launched 2 new terminals - for low-cost airlines and VIPs. Accordingly, terminals 4 and 5.

Today, the Singapore authorities do not stop there; new projects are being developed to improve and modernize the air port.

Rooftop pool

In addition to a regular shower in one of the lounge areas, you can take a shower for about the same cost (about 15 SGD) followed by relaxation in the pool, which is located on the roof of Terminal 1 (level 3). There is also a bar where you can order a drink of your choice. The pool area offers a nice view of the airport runway, as well as the aircraft parking lot. By the way, use of the pool is free for guests of the Aerotel transit hotel, located on the same level 3 of Terminal 1.

For wildlife lovers

Changi Airport is rich in more than just the Internet and video games; there is also entertainment for those who want to take a break from the screens of various devices. Nature lovers will be able to look into one of the gardens - in Terminal 1 there is a cactus garden with more than 100 species of these plants, in Terminal 2 there is a sunflower garden, and in Terminal 3 there is an orchid garden. In addition, in Terminal 3 there is a butterfly garden, where you can see up to 40 different species of these beautiful creatures, as well as admire a 6-meter waterfall. And in the same Terminal 3 there is a pond where large golden koi carps swim - beautiful ornamental fish.

Entertainment for children

If you are traveling with children, then your offspring will not be bored either. Thus, in the transit areas of Terminals 2 and 3 there are tables for creativity, where using multi-colored wax crayons you can transfer the works of Singaporean artist Justin Lee onto paper. For children under 12 years of age, each terminal has playgrounds with a variety of stairs, slides, etc. And in Terminal 2 there is a family recreation area (Family Zone), equipped with rooms for changing and feeding infants, a play area and cartoons. We have already mentioned video games and cinema.

Massage

Another cool feature of Singapore airport is the presence of massage chairs and foot massagers in each terminal. In Russia, such things are usually located in shopping centers and you will have to pay to use them. And in Changi they are completely free - sit and relax as much as you like. If mechanical massage is not enough for you, you can go to one of the massage parlors, where a professional will work on you. However, in this case, be prepared to part with a decent amount of money!

Shopping

For shopaholics, Changi is a real haven, just a paradise. The number of shops and boutiques is off the charts; you can buy almost everything! There are standard duty-free items with alcohol, tobacco, perfume and candy. There are fashion boutiques from famous brands like Burberry, Gucci, etc. There are branded digital equipment stores (Apple, Sony), as well as multi-brand electronics supermarkets. There are shops with books and magazines. There are shops selling Singapore souvenirs. There are pharmacies. There are perfume shops. There are confectionery shops with the most famous brands of chocolate and candies. Watch and jewelry stores. It’s simply impossible to list everything! In general, look at the terminal maps, find what you need, and go ahead, fill your suitcases!

This is not all that is available at Singapore airport. It is also worth mentioning that for financial transactions there are ATMs and currency exchange offices, and there are special rooms for smokers. All transit areas have mailboxes, and in the general area of Terminal 2 there is even a whole post office (open from 9 am to 6 pm on weekdays).

The terminals are interconnected by passages with travelators, and the SkyTrain high-speed train also runs between them with a short break at night (2:30 - 5:00). The journey by train from one terminal to the other will take approximately 3-4 minutes.

Despite many prestigious awards and accolades, Singaporeans do not think to stop there. Currently, work is underway to build a new, 4th terminal, which will make the airport even larger, more comfortable and more interesting. It's only the beginning!
